Carefully Caring for Dentures
Carefully Caring for Dentures
While Teeth May Be Fairly Strong, Dentures Can Be Quite Fragile
Caring for dentures properly can be tricky. Dentures need to be brushed and flossed as often as your natural teeth, but that can be tricky, since they’re generally pretty slippery.
Tips For Caring For Dentures
1. Dentures are slippery when they are wet. Be sure that if you accidentally drop them, they will land someplace soft, like a folded towel or washcloth. Be careful even if you’re in a hurry – dentures can easily be cracked if they are dropped in an empty wash basin.
2. Hold dentures gently. The plastic can bend, crack or become misshapen if not held properly.
3. Brush and floss dentures daily. It may take some getting used to brushing teeth that aren’t inside your mouth, but dentures need as much attention as natural teeth. Brushing and flossing prevents the accumulation of food particles and plaque, and can help prevent staining. Gently brush all surfaces of the dentures, not just the “teeth.”
4. Use a soft brush and a gentle cleanser. Dentures are easier to scratch and wear down than natural teeth, so be sure to either use a brush that is designed for denture brushing or the softest toothbrush available. Be sure to use a non-abrasive cleaner, as well.
5. Use an oral care probiotic mint to keep good bacteria in your mouth at optimal levels, even if you have a full set of replacement teeth. The beneficial bacteria in these mints help keep breath fresh around the clock.
