Safe and Healthy Treats for Cats

- Safe and Healthy Treats for Cats
I have a friend whose cat comes running every time the cat hears the can-opener break the seal on a can, in hopes of receiving a bite of two of tuna. My friend is indulgent – when it’s tuna in the can, she does allow Simba a few bites. Sometimes she even squeezes the “juice” over Simba’s dry food. Simba is a lucky girl.
When it Comes to Cat Treats, a Little Goes a Long Way
Pet experts say sharing some foods with our cats is safe, but the safe list is short, and treats should be shared infrequently as they tend to lead to feline obesity.
Cats are carnivores, therefore the majority of their diets should be protein. While it’s safe to give Tigger a slice of melon (Yes! Some cats eat melon!) it’s not a treat he should eat often because it is high in natural sugars – which is not a natural part of a cat’s diet.
Look Out for Bones!
Tuna and salmon are good treats to offer on occasion, as is cooked chicken, but always be sure there are no bones in the meat before offering it to your furry lap warmer. Choking on bones is a serious problem for cats – even fish bones.
Foods You Should NEVER Share With Kitty
There are some foods that are an absolute no-no for kitties. These include onions, tea, chocolate, coffee and grapes or raisins. Coffee drinkers who take milk in their daily cuppa need to beware that cats might try to take a sip, and they may end up sick from doing so. In fact, in addition to the list above, contrary to popular belief, even milk isn’t the best treat for a cat. Milk is high in fat, and many cats can’t digest it well, resulting in litter box mishaps.
Other Ways to Show Your Cat Love
In our culture, we tend to think “food is love.” When it comes to pets, though, food is just food. It’s meant to nourish them and keep them healthy. One great way to love your pet with food is to add pet probiotic sprinkles [link teddyspride.com] to their food. These sprinkles give your cat fresher breath and whiter, cleaner teeth. Who wouldn’t love that?
