You Just Can’t Resist!

Giving Puppies or Kittens as Holiday Gifts

Most pet experts advise against giving pets as holiday gifts. The energy is too high, kids can be over stimulated, and your new pet can be very frightened by all of the new sights and smells.

Giving Pets as Christmas Gifts

Sometimes parents – or grandparents – just can’t resist.

What gift could possibly top the joy of a new puppy or kitten? If that sounds like your family, and no amount of warning will sway you from bringing a new pet into the family for the holidays, there are some things you can do to make the holidays go smoother for your new family member.

Try Not To Introduce The Pet On The Big Day

Consider bringing the pet into your home a few days before Christmas, so she gets as much attention as she needs and starts to get settled in before the big holiday. Puppies and kittens like to find a good place to hide and rest. If you bring your kids’ new best friend home a few days early, they’ll be better equipped to handle the excitement of Christmas morning.

If you want to reserve the surprise for Christmas morning, it might be best to make the new pet the only present under the tree, so your new family member gets everyone’s 100% undivided attention. If the new puppy or kitten is just one of many gifts under your tree, the excitement of unwrapping gifts will likely overwhelm her.

Try this Trick - If it’s too much of a drag to only have the new buddy under the tree, wrapping a photo of the pet and picking her up a few days after Christmas might be just the ticket.

Whatever way you choose to introduce the new pet to your family, there is one thing you definitely need to do:
Be prepared.

Make sure you’ve found a vet, have all the accessories the pet will need, especially food, water, treats and a place to rest. If you’re getting a puppy, a collar and leash will be absolutely necessary, as will be some good chew toys (so they don’t chew the legs off your table).

To keep your pets’ breath puppy or kitten fresh, be sure to sprinkle some pet oral care probiotics on her food once a day. These beneficial bacteria help crowd out the bacteria that cause pets’ breath to smell yucky. They also keep their teeth looking white and healthy.

Speaking about kittens, mine did something so cute today. She keeped jumping around trying to chase a fly and eventually got dizzy and started walking funny. I wish I video taped it because it was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.
