Bacteria? Ack!

Break out the antibacterial soap! Hand me the bottle of mouthwash that kills 99.9% of “germs.”

Then again, I’m reminded of something I learned way back in biology class – our bodies are teeming with bacteria, most of which work together in harmony with the system of the body where they are located. They offer health and balance throughout the body.

Beneficial bacteria? I’ll buy that.

“Probiotics” is the technical term for those beneficial bacteria that thrive throughout the body. These beneficial bacteria can be thought of as an army that sets up a “basecamp” somewhere in the body and takes up arms against the harmful bacteria that attack the health of that part of the body. Probiotics have long been used to support intestinal and “gut” health. Scientists have also long been researching other areas of the body where probiotics can be beneficial.

One result that may surprise you is that beneficial bacteria can have a very strong presence in the mouth. In fact, it’s been discovered that one particular resident of the mouth, called S. mutans, is the bacteria primarily responsible for causing tooth decay and gum disease.

How do I get rid of the bacteria that causes tooth decay and gum disease?

Trick question! Just like other systems in the body, the only thing that can totally wipe out any bacteria is by taking antibiotics or using alcohol-based mouthwashes. Unfortunately, these products wipe out both the beneficial and harmful bacteria. Their effects last only a short time, and then the first bacteria to be reintroduced in the mouth will have the strongest “basecamp.”

The way to deal with harmful bacteria on a daily basis is through supplementation of beneficial bacteria, which compete with the harmful bacteria for space and nutrients. Better oral bacteria equals better oral health.
